• HALLWAY INSPIRATION • Of course, as we dive • HALLWAY INSPIRATION •

Of course, as we dive into renovation planning, I’ve been soaking up all of the design inspo I can get my hands on – pinning all the things (you can see all of my house inspo here) and saving every second image I scroll through on Instagram. I actually had an idea for this month’s Instagram Saves post weeks ago, but when I sat down to write this post, I realized my “saves” folder was showing me something else – in scrolling through my recent saves, it’s clear that I may be slightly obsessed with arches. Arched shelves, arched doorways, even arched alcoves over a stove or vanity – if there’s an arch in it, I’m pretty sure I’ve saved it. I think I’m most drawn to the way an arch can be both traditional and modern all the same time. That perfect balance, and the character it brings to a space because of it, is a perfect example of everything I want this house of ours to be – traditional, modern and filled to the brim with charm & character.

Designer Lauren McGrath knows how to make the most of a small space. Her own studio apartment, featured in @dominomag several years ago, was the inspiration for countless young women’s first apartments (including this editor’s!). Since then, McGrath has continued to find success as a designer alongside her mother, Suzanne McGrath. The two head the aptly named New York–based firm @mcgrath2 , creating richly layered spaces that blend classic elements with unexpected pattern and furnishing combinations. Since it’s no surprise that mixing patterns, colors, and styles in a small space can be a challenge, AD decided to look to someone who’s mastered the art of the studio.

• BEDROOM INSPIRATION • I scheduled a Colour • BEDROOM INSPIRATION •

I scheduled a Colour Consultancy with Farrow & Ball, because that’s where you start when you want to really nail the process of picking a color and painting a room. Before the consult, I had a vision starting to form and was pretty confident in what color I wanted to go with. I had a zoom call with Patrick from Farrow & Ball, and he looked at the room, the accessories, and he genuinely took time to understand my style. I told him my plans, even down to details about how natural light filled the room, and he gave me a few different color options (none of which were the ones I planned, which made me hesitant at first). But sometimes, even for me, I think it’s best to listen to the pros and I am SO glad I did. He chose one of the oldest @farrowandball colors: Light Blue.

@haminteriors is known for its timeless yet fresh approach to design. Launched in 2011 by Nick, Pamela and Tom Cox, this family-run studio is dedicated to creating meticulously well-considered, comfortable and high-quality interiors to complement busy family lives. Here, we take a tour around Tom’s own London home.

Kitchen design is an integral part of our business, and something I’m really passionate about. For my own home, I designed the kitchen and our in-house team installed it. The antique drapers table works as an island. Originally, it quite wasn’t tall enough (I’m 6ft 5in, so needed some extra height) so I had some antique castors added to raise it up, which was also great from a practical point of view. I wanted to add a bit more edge and practicality to the piece without using marble, so I had a custom piece of unlacquered brass sheet made, which we inlayed into the top. I found the lights above the island at an antiques fair.

The tiles are a very simple matte glazed finish – similar ones are available from @firedearthuk . I love @liebherrhomeuk fridges for their utilitarian, simple design, and Lacanche cookers – they have some great colours and I love the metal finishes. Waterworks are good for kitchen taps – I like the RW Atlas range. For china, I love @mirandaberrowceramics mugs and Laguiole cutlery.

A great way to save without totally compromising your vision is to use natural stone tiles instead of larger seamless slabs. Given their natural resistance to water, natural stone tiles like marble or granite are an excellent flooring choice for a saturation-prone space like a bathroom. This bathroom designed by @heidicaillierdesign features black and white stone tiles on the floors and alternating gray marble subway tiles on the shower.

• KITCHEN INSPIRATION • By using more traditi • KITCHEN INSPIRATION •

By using more traditional cabinetry, hardware and sink, we were considerate to the age of the property. The island was the natural position for the sink since the client wanted an AGA on the back wall but keeping this to one side of the island meant I was able to elevate the half of the island closest to the door, which allowed a substantial island without it feeling too heavy in the room. I left wall cabinets out of the design, ensuring we built in plenty of storage into the tall cabinets and made use of an existing walk-in larder – this helped keep the room light and open. The inclusion of a stone shelf allowed more brass detailing and was important to the client so the kitchen felt more decorative. The client chose to carry the kitchen colours through into the dining nook, helping to make the spaces feel connected.

Look up in most houses in this country, and you’re met by an unbroken expanse of whiteness, and plaster meeting plaster at an unembellished right angle. There are benefits to the simplicity; Edward Bulmer identifies white or off-white as the ideal for ceilings, because “it reflects sunlight.” But there are also advantages to something more decorative – and, once upon a time, most ceilings in this country would have adhered to that description, being adorned with colour as well as, depending on the period, cast-plaster ornaments, borders, speciality papers, or murals. Recently, there’s been a marked return to the practice. “Considering the ceiling as the fifth wall is another opportunity to play with colour and texture in an unexpected way,” says Louise Wicksteed, Design Director of Sims Hilditch, while Juliette Byrne points out that “it can add architectural detail where there is none.” And, says Lucy Hammond Giles of Sibyl Colefax & John Fowler, by engaging decorative tricks, “you can make a lofty room feel cosier, or, conversely, give a sense of spaciousness to somewhere quite low-ceilinged.” So how best to harness this value-adding upper garnish in our own homes?

Interior designer @heidicaillierdesign never fails to impress me with her design work. The homes she designs are warm, timeless, and packed with unique (vintage) design features.

This time, she has designed a wonderful guesthouse on Fox Island filled with pink tones, but also with moody black spaces. Heidi had already worked with the owners of this guesthouse on their family home but for this home she opted for a bolder design.

The wooden dining table is a design by @shoppeamberinteriors Interiors which is surrounded by pink velvet dining chairs for a warm touch.

What most stands out in this room is of course the lovely wallpaper. It is called “Cellules Fruitées” from Belfry Historic. The design dates back to 1802 and is a drawing by Jacques-Emile Ruhlmann.

Green kitchens are expected to grow even more in popularity in 2023, perhaps as it’s a colour we associate primarily with nature. This grounding shade has an incredible way of reconnecting us with our surroundings, creating moments of calm and positivity. It also seems that people are becoming more comfortable with bold colours.

Not in the traditional sense of how homes are designed today — it’s very different, and a bit ramshackle. It’s quirky but that’s what I love about it. It’s got so much heart and soul.”

The entire property had to be rewired, the walls redone and the floors repurposed. Terracotta flooring in the entry was replaced by grey-and-white marble tiles sourced from a French chateau.

The challenge then became balancing that tribute to heritage with a more modern sense of comfort—the space is now a private residence but with a medical wellness license for high-profile guests. “The rooms still feel gloriously grand, but comfortable, usable, and fresh,” adds Stride. With the help of architect @henryholland and landscaper Capability Brown, the Albion Nord team found inspiration in the work of @jasperconran , specifically his Wardour Castle project. A notion you’ll see reflected in the simple furniture set against artistic molding and ornate light fixtures. It’s historical extravagance—minus the clutter. What makes it work and not be too sickly is the black windows and accessories which punch through the richness of the colour and stop you drowning in pastel sweetness. ‘Think big, start small’ is the approach Los Angeles-based architecture firm @walkerworkshop took; designing a home that’s both unpretentiously majestic and rustically refined.

The spirit of Mandeville Canyon is in its surroundings – in the rolling hills punctuated by desert fan palms, and coast live oaks – and in the gentle ocean breeze. These contextual cues bring to pass a ‘modern-rustic’ home, composing simple forms and stripped-down references to traditional American farmhouses.

In a city where the weather is warm almost all year round, the materials follow suit. Travertine, white oak, terracotta, and western red cedar, among other intrinsically warm materials, make up the DNA of Mandeville Canyon. “The goal was to ke unadorned while also staying true to the home’s surroundings,” principal architect @noah_walker says.

In Washington, D.C., in 1925, a kitchen that consisted of a gas stove, a 4-foot-wide countertop, and a sink was all most people really wanted or needed. In fact, it was such a standard that cooking zones were typically tucked out of the way, underneath the staircase. But fast-forward nearly a century, and, well…you start to see the problem. “Now that we have all these other appliances, we need to expand that very limited footprint,” says interior designer and architect @nicholasgpotts . Swinging open the front door to our cabin on Marley lake we were immediately struck by the soaring ceilings and wood-heavy interiors, which perfectly frame the lake that can be spied through the floor to ceiling windows that form the back wall of the cabin (and which also fully open to an exterior deck). The space felt considered and cosy with a clever kitchenette tucked away at one end and a plush seating area, complete with roaring fire, at the other. Downstairs we claimed the main bedroom as our own, a cave like retreat thanks to its black ceiling and low lighting. We happily noted a 2nd TV here too - it doesn’t feel like a holiday unless you can watch movies from bed! Opposite is the main bathroom with a tub big enough for two. And hovering above it all is a mezzanine floor with second bedroom and ensuite. Our favourite feature upstairs was the above-bed skylight, perfect for stargazing or watching the rain.

On top of loving the utilitarian function of the space we also love to design them. We’ve found almost every good breakfast nook has three things, a great chandelier, a space appropriate table and an eclectic mix of seating. Why Do Terracotta & Blush Work So Well Together?

“Cooked earth or terracotta, as we know it, is one of the oldest building materials. The colour derives from the heating of the natural pigmentation in the earth. Earth is a different colour around the world and for millennia, we’ve used it to make pigment – usually those that are rich in iron ore and give us red and yellow ochres. These earth pigments are ideal for creating the most pleasing and flattering blush pinks, so essentially terracotta and blush derive from the same source, which is why they can be used together so successfully.” – Edward Bulmer, founder of @edwardbulmerpaint

Castley McCrimmon initially proposed a highly contemporary form to juxtapose against the original period home, with a focus on creating and enhancing demarcation. However, as Owen explains, “early design meetings suggested we were pushing the boundaries a little too far with the client, so we softened our approach.” Uncovering a way to extend this heritage home and create an exciting yet sympathetic language between the existing and the proposed was key. A fine balancing act ensued, whereby Castley McCrimmon worked to identify the elements of the heritage architecture that captivated the clients and reinterpret those features through a measured, contemporary lens. “Our views on the design were initially quite different, which was challenging,” says Jake. “It put us in a place where we were slightly uncomfortable, but it forced us to consider our approach and our clients’ brief even more carefully.”

We celebrate all forms of craft and love to commission artists to create bespoke pieces.

We love to create one of a kind pieces which make a room completely individual, from hand-painted murals to embellished cushions and headboards.

This beautiful hand painted applique headboard in the Terrace Suite at @hamyardhotelsoho is an example of that handcrafted touch and how to combine textures. We must keep craft going in this modern world.

The Obumex ‘Joseph Dirand’ kitchen is the heart of the townhouse and can cater to both relaxed dining and entertaining. “There are different places to sit with differing heights to suit the mood or time of day,” Edo explains. “The lower part of the marble kitchen island is set up as a breakfast table, surrounded by wooden vintage dining chairs, but there is also a relaxed seating area to the rear,” he adds.

The kitchen balances old and new, featuring the @alliedmaker Voyager 33 pendant and a 19th-century antique French pine storage. Recessed double doors from the kitchen lead across the hallway into the formal dining room, painted a deep mahogany red.

Whites and grays will always be classic, but darker neutrals are coming to the forefront once again. We’re seeing shades of brown appear in tile, furnishings, fabrics, rugs and even walls. Along with other interior designers, we’re seeing the rise of earthy browns, along with chocolate browns and caramel browns, being incorporated into designs to evoke a sense of elegance and timelessness.
